Moving within Barcelona: a newcomer's guide

Last updated: 2026-05-18

If you moved to Barcelona for work, chances are you'll change flat more than once: a short-term rental when you arrive, then somewhere more stable, maybe a different neighbourhood. This guide explains, in plain terms, how moving within the city works, what it costs and what to check before you book.

It's written for people arriving from abroad who don't know the local quirks yet (the low-emission zone, regulated parking, the walk-up buildings of the old town). We work in both English and Spanish.

Full removals vs. a man with a van

For a one or two bedroom flat, a single room or a few items, you don't need a full removals company with a lorry and a big crew: a van with a driver ("man with a van") is faster and noticeably cheaper. For a whole house with a lot of furniture, a full removal with more movers makes sense.

How pricing works (and why we quote a fixed price)

Many services charge by the hour, and the final bill is a mystery until they finish. We give a fixed price upfront: it depends on distance, number of items, floors without a lift and whether a second mover is needed. It doesn't change unless what you're moving changes. You can get an instant estimate with the calculator on the site.

The low-emission zone and parking: what newcomers miss

Barcelona has a Low Emission Zone (LEZ / ZBE) covering almost the whole city: vehicles without an environmental sticker can't drive on weekdays. Our van complies, so it's not your problem — but it's why renting an old van and driving it yourself can go wrong.

Most of the centre is paid parking (blue/green zone). For a move with many items it's sometimes worth reserving a loading bay or requesting a street-occupation permit from the city; we guide you on how to do it depending on your street.

Buildings: lifts, stairs and narrow streets

In Barcelona the building matters as much as the distance. Many Eixample buildings have a lift; the old town (Ciutat Vella), Gràcia or El Carmel have walk-ups with narrow staircases, and that affects time and price. That's why each area page on the site explains its specific logistics.

Common situations when settling in

When you arrive in Barcelona the same jobs come up again and again: buying a sofa or bed on Wallapop or IKEA and not being able to carry it, getting a washing machine to the new flat, clearing a flat on a tenant change, or moving just a few boxes and a couple of pieces of furniture. There's a service page for each case with its own price example.

Practical tips

  • Book with some lead time: the best slots (outside rush hour) fill up, especially at the end and start of the month.
  • Measure the lift and staircase first: a large sofa may not fit and could need hoisting via the façade.
  • Ask your landlord about the building's moving rules (time windows, service lift).
  • If you buy on Wallapop, you arrange the time with the seller; we only do the transport.
  • Get the fixed price in writing before confirming. With us you have it in under 1 hour.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work in English?
Yes. We handle both the quote and the moving day in English and Spanish. The site is bilingual.
I just arrived and don't have an NIE / padrón yet — is that a problem to book?
No. For a move or a haul you don't need an NIE or padrón; just the pickup and delivery address and what needs moving.
How much does a small move within Barcelona cost?
It depends on distance, items and floors without a lift. Every service and area page shows an indicative example calculated with real rates; the fixed price comes with a quote, in under 1 hour.
How far in advance should I book?
The sooner the better, especially at the end/start of the month. Same-day is sometimes possible (with a small urgency surcharge), but don't rely on it in peak season.
